Mother’s Day

My boys have always made Mother’s Day as near perfect as I can imagine. This year isn’t any different. I am blessed to have children who have made my heart full this spring. And shhh, rumor has it one of my guys has already begun some secret planning for Mom’s Day. Dad suggested maybe fishing. But, my boy knows fishing isn’t really my thing. He wants me to really love the day, so after some contemplations on the the way to school the lightbulb came on. He said he had the best idea for my day. Mom would love to go frog gigging. Send help, people. Someone teach him about gift cards.

This year’s Mom’s Day snuck up on me. It came prancing in with its own little pity party complete with a tiny violin orchestra. Don’t worry, it didn’t take God long to bring my mind’s performance to a screeching halt. He quickly reminded me this Hallmark made day will always be broken without His full perfection. I only need to decide until then if I am going to let this world say who I am on Mother’s Day or am I going to remember who God says I am?

It’s the week before Mother’s Day and social media is buzzing with all of the things we shouldn’t be doing; all of the toes we need to care not to step on. Don’t hurt the feelings of the ones who have lost, those who have never had, have it oh so differently, or those who long to be. If you think I’m being insensitive come close. I’ve had it normal, different, and have a handful of those I love, and wish so much I had here with me, I am typing through tears. I bet you have a handful of heartache no one knows about, too.

Who are we? Are we Hallmark’s broken version? Or are we going to step up and remember who God says we are as His beloved?

Ephesians 1:4-5 “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ … “

1 Peter 2:9 “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession … “

Luke 12:7 ” … the very hairs of your head are numbered. Don’t be afraid …

Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

My go-to and favorite.

This Mother’s Day let’s put away the kitschy, worldly, promises and remember the One who chose you, knows you, and is close to you.

And maybe, gift cards.

Not very Mother’s Day-ish, but my favorite song right now.
