Okay, maybe fashion does take a few days off when it comes to hair. Maybe it takes more than a few days off, let’s go with five out of seven. Hair is hard, friends. Don’t let those Pantene commercials fool you. A friend told me she knew of so many women who have hair extensions. What?! You mean some of you real people have extensions? I thought only the rich and famous did that. You all have me fooled. Don’t worry, she kept your secret if it’s you. But I’ve got my eye on all of you now. Fashion is definitely not on a holiday in your hair world.
In my world, I’ve got work to do. I did not wake up like this. Feel free to ask my family what the hair looks like upon wake up. Or at 2:30pm on a normal afternoon at home, truthfully. Who am I kidding, since the hospital days, I have zero problem making a Target run looking like I just walked out of my bedroom. How much do I care? ZERRRROOO.
First let’s remind ourselves (ME) what’s important. Not hair. Birdsnest hair is okay and can be figured out. A gentle and quiet spirit is a lot more difficult for me to wrangle. God lays out which is really more important to Him.
“Your beauty should not come from outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within; the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 NLT
Here’s the hair stuff I probably used if you see me looking like I tried harder than dry shampoo and a butterfly clip to the head …
I have switched my shampoo and conditioner to Monat. Some of you are groaning at the mention of a MLM (multi-level marketing) referral right now. Don’t worry. I don’t sell it. But let’s all keep in mind, behind every MLM is a stay-at-home mom just working to stay at HOME with her kids and make a little money, and hair products or essential oils, or kitchen utensils, or whatever. But, mostly, just to stay HOME and help pay some bills.
Back to my shampoo/conditioner that truly works. These past years of stress have done a number on my hair. It has fallen out, become one big curly knot ball, and become a teensy bit more unruly and grey. Yeah, this stuff is a tad (a lot tad) pricey. But, I buy it maybe a few times a year. It lasts forever. I use the Volume System. Because I am a child of the ’80’s. Big hair/Don’t care and the higher the hair the closer to Jesus. If you think you want this stuff. Here’s my link to get yours: Monat. Honestly, I think I get some kind of kick-back. But, I have no idea what that entails.
Here’s the honest to goodness truth about Monat. I love the shampoo/conditioner/root lift system I use. I do not love everything I have tried. I mean, do you love every thing from every brand you use? No. It happens. If you want to try it out first before you buy, I know a woman (who is working to stay home with her kids and make some money at the same time) who can help you out if you are local to me.
Mousse and curl cream are my other necessities to make my hair look a little less like a bird’s nest. Yes, I used to have straight hair. Getting old is weird. Now it’s curly. I’ve tried every mousse & curl cream out there. They are either weighty or crunchy. Except Living Proof. It leaves my curls soft, not crunchy. As much as I loved the 1980’s, I do not want ’80’s crunchy hair back. I love the Living Proof line of products, buuuuut I can only buy so many $$$$ items for my hair. You can buy this at several locations. Here’s the deal, Living Proof is priced for the likes of Jennifer Anniston, who is the face (or hair) of their line. Yes, I did once have the “Jennifer/Rachel” haircut, if you were wondering. Now, thanks to Marshall’s for their dedicated service, bumpkins like me can get the Living Proof goods there for less than half the original price. I’m trusting you with the location of my secret stash. Leave some for me. By the way, smoosh these to products together and squish them into your hair to get the perfect, non-birdnest curl.
Hairspray — here’s where I need your help. I cannot find a hairspray that I love. I’ve tried them all from every price range; or at least the Marshall’s version of the expensive brands. What are you using that doesn’t give you helmet head but holds until the day is done?
We all know hair starts with a good cut. I’m lucky to know a couple of great hairstylists in my area if you need a referral. They are the best I have found and have super reasonable prices.
What else do you have that works in your hair? Go on, tell us what keeps you looking like fashion hasn’t taken the day off. Got something you sell to keep you at home? Maybe you make it? Feel free to link it in the comments.
